Maggie Ryder is an English singer-songwriter and musician best known for her extensive work as a backing vocalist for prominent artists, including Brian May and Eurythmics. While she's stepped away from the music industry spotlight, her contributions continue to be recognized.
Ryder's early career saw her playing keyboards for the British funk/rock band Krakatoa, where she also co-wrote much of their material with her partner, Graeme Lamb. Following her departure to focus on a solo career as a vocalist and songwriter, she was succeeded on keyboards by Hans Zimmer.
During the 1970s, Ryder secured a solo recording contract with Polydor Records and released her self-titled album in 1978. The 1980s and early 1990s saw her become a highly sought-after backing vocalist, contributing to recordings and performances by Marvin Gaye (1981), Eurythmics (1983), Manfred Mann's Earth Band (1987/1996), Go West (1987), and Queen (at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992). Notably, she was one of the writers behind "You're the Voice," the international hit single for John Farnham.
Ryder's collaboration with Brian May included providing backing vocals on his "Back to the Light" album (1992) and joining him on the subsequent world tour. She also worked with Eric Clapton during his 1993 tour and his 1994 Royal Albert Hall performances.
Her songwriting credits extend to "Love With No Strings," co-written with Derek Magoogan, which appeared on Chaka Khan's album "The Woman I Am."
Beyond music, Ryder made a few television appearances, including an episode of the drama "Juliet Bravo" in 1983.
Since 1995, Ryder has resided in New York, where she transitioned to a new career as a website designer and creative technologist. While no longer actively performing, her legacy as a versatile and talented musician remains.
