Johnny Lion, born as John van Leeuwarden (The Hague, 4 July 1941 - Breda, 31 January 2019), was a versatile Dutch artist who was active as both a singer and an actor.
Musical career
Lion started his musical career in 1959 as the singer of the band Johnny & His Jewels, which later became known as The Jumping Jewels. The group, inspired by British rock and roll singer Cliff Richard, scored a number 1 hit in 1961 with "Wheels" and remained popular in the Netherlands until 1965.
After his time with The Jumping Jewels, Lion continued solo and in 1965 released the Dutch-language song "Sophietje", a cover of the Swedish song "Fröken Fräken". The song became a big hit and gave Lion eternal fame.
In the years that followed, Lion released several more singles, including "Tjingeling" (1966) and "Alleen in Dallas" (1983), but none of these songs achieved the success of "Sophietje". However, Lion remained active in the music world, including performing in the Circus Boltini and acting as a presenter.
Other activities
In addition to his musical career, Lion was also active as an actor. For example, he starred in the films "Siberia" (1998) and "Van God Los" (2003).
Lion also worked as a journalist and columnist. He wrote for the weekly magazine Panorama, among other things, and was editor-in-chief of the SENA Performers Magazine.
Johnny Lion passed away on 31 January 2019 at the age of 77 in Breda. He is remembered as a versatile artist with a great passion for music and entertainment.
