Hans Dorrestijn: Black-humored humor and bird watching

Hans Dorrestijn (Ede, 1940) is a versatile talent: lyricist, translator, writer and comedian, known for his black-humored style. He writes texts and songs for fellow comedians and children's series such as Sesame Street.

After his youth, during which he processed the loss of his father in the resistance, Dorrestijn attended teacher training college and studied Dutch. After a period as a teacher, he decided in 1975 to fully focus on writing and cabaret.

He wrote for well-known names such as Herman van Veen, Joost Prinsen and Adèle Bloemendaal, and contributed to various radio and television programs. His oeuvre as a writer is broad, from children's books to poems for adults, often with a social theme.

In the 1990s, Dorrestijn could be heard on the VPRO radio program "Het Gebouw" with his satirical "Dorrestijn's Press Agency". His autobiography "Final Acquittal" (2006), about the decline of a marriage, was followed by the successful theater performance "The Naked Existence".

After performing solo for many years, Dorrestijn collaborated with pianists Frans Ehlhart and later Martin van Dijk. In 2007, he broke through to a wide audience with "Dorrestijn's Bird Guide". In 2008, he announced his farewell to the big theaters, after which he focused on smaller venues with recitations from his own work.

On television, Dorrestijn appeared in programs such as "Baardmannetjes" (2014-2017), in which he went in search of special birds together with a bird watcher, and "Alone on an Island" (2021), in which he stayed on an uninhabited island for a week. In 2023 he returned to the Zwarte Cross for an afternoon full of recitations. In that same year, he made the four-part television series Dorrestijn and the Earthworm Dilemma for Omroep MAX, in which he and his guests discuss solutions in the field of sustainability and climate.

In the 2023/2024 theater season, Hans Dorrestijn said goodbye to the theater profession with the show "'t Houdt een keer op".
