Noordkaap: A Belgian rock band with a lasting impact

Noordkaap, a Belgian band formed in 1990, captivated audiences with their catchy blend of rock and pop, fronted by the charismatic Stijn Meuris. Their hits like "Ik hou van u" (I love you), "Wat is Kunst?" (What is Art?) and "Satelliet Suzy" (Satellite Suzy) resonated deeply with the Dutch-speaking audience.

Breakthrough and success

Noordkaap's journey began with a victory at Humo's Rock Rally in 1990, a prestigious competition that launched their career. The original lineup consisted of Stijn Meuris (vocals), Lars Van Bambost (guitar), Erik Sterckx (bass), Wim De Wilde (keyboards), and Nico Van Calster (drums). Their cover of Will Tura's "Arme Joe" on the compilation album "Turalura" quickly gained attention, leading to a record deal.

Their debut album "Feest in de Stad" (Party in the City) was released in 1991, followed by "Gigant" (Giant) in 1994. A year later, Noordkaap composed the soundtrack for the film "Manneken Pis," further boosting their popularity. The single "Ik hou van u" became a massive hit, topping the charts for weeks. In 2005, the song was re-recorded in a bilingual version to celebrate 175 years of Belgium.

Changes and hiatus

After the success of the soundtrack for the film "Alles moet weg" (Everything Must Go), based on the book by Tom Lanoye, the band became less active. Following the departure of some members, only Stijn Meuris and Lars Van Bambost remained. With the addition of Mario Goossens, Anton Janssens, and Wladimir Geels, Noordkaap was complete again and released the album "Massis" in 1999.

On April 1, 2000, Noordkaap gave a farewell concert at the Ancienne Belgique (AB) in Brussels. Guitarist Lars Van Bambost joined Novastar, while Stijn Meuris formed a new rock group called Monza.

Comeback

In 2013, "Ik hou van u" was inducted into the hall of fame of Flemish classics by Radio 2. In March 2019, the band announced their comeback after a 19-year hiatus. On November 26 of that year, Noordkaap played their first reunion concert in honor of Luc De Vos.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused further concerts to be postponed until 2022 and 2023. The current lineup consists of Lars Van Bambost (guitar), Erik Sterckx (bass), Nico Van Calster (drums), Wim De Wilde (keyboards), and Stijn Meuris (vocals). In 2022, Noordkaap gave three sold-out concerts at the Ancienne Belgique and performed at summer festivals such as Rock Herk, Gladiolen, Crammerock, and TW Classic. The band also gave concerts in the Netherlands, including at Bruis Maastricht. In November 2022, they performed the first concert of the five Radio 1 sessions at the Arenberg in Antwerp.

With their comeback, Noordkaap has proven that their music is still relevant and appeals to a wide audience. They continue to play an important role in Flemish music history.
