Raphael Wallfisch, born in London on June 15, 1953, is an English cellist.

Biography
Raphael Wallfisch was born in London to musical parents, cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and pianist Peter Wallfisch. Guided very early on by professors Amaryllis Fleming, Amadeo Baldovino and Derek Simpson, he chose to devote himself to the cello. After studying with the Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky at the Thornton School of Music at the University of California, he won the Gaspar Cassadó International Cello Competition at the age of 24 in Florence. He has since pursued an international career and has performed with several orchestras. He is also a regular guest at festivals in London (The Proms), Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Spoleto, Prades, Oslo and Schleswig-Holstein in Germany.

Passionate about teaching, Raphael Wallfisch holds master classes all over the world. He is a professor at the Zürich Winterthur Konservatorium and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Raphael Wallfisch has several recordings to his credit which include concert works by Ernest Bloch, Maurice Ravel, Ernő Dohnányi, Ottorino Respighi, Samuel Barber, Paul Hindemith, Bohuslav Martinů, Richard Strauss, Antonín Dvořák, Dmitri Kabalevski and Aram Khachaturian. A large place is given to the English cello repertoire with works by Benjamin Britten, Gerald Finzi, Kenneth Leighton, Frederick Delius, Arnold Bax, Arthur Bliss, Ernest John Moeran and William Walton. Wallfisch worked with several British composers who often wrote works for him, such as Peter Maxwell Davies, Kenneth Leighton, James MacMillan, Paul Patterson, Robert Simpson, Robert Saxton, Roger Smalley, Giles Swayne, John Tavener and Adrian Williams.

In addition to his career as a soloist, Raphael Wallfisch performs with the Shaham Erez Wallfisch Trio along with violinist Hagai Shaham and pianist Arnon Erez. Founded in 2009, the trio is already renowned on the international scene. He has two recordings to his credit on the Nimbus label.

Raphael Wallfisch plays a cello by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume from 1865 and a Gennaro Gagliano from 1760.
