Salvatore Phillip "Sonny" Bono (February 16, 1935 - January 5, 1998) was an American figure who gained recognition in the entertainment industry and later pursued a political career. He is best known as one half of the musical duo Sonny & Cher, which he formed with his second wife, Cher. Their music, particularly hits like "I Got You Babe," was popular in the 1960s.
In addition to his musical work, Bono was also active as an actor in films and television. He had his own television shows and appeared in various films. While not considered a particularly outstanding acting talent, his personality and fame allowed him to secure roles.
In the 1980s, Bono transitioned into politics. He was a member of the Republican Party and was elected mayor of Palm Springs, California, in 1988. His mayorship is generally considered unremarkable. He was committed to the city but failed to bring about major changes.
After his period as mayor, Bono became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1995, representing California's 44th district. His political career was abruptly cut short by his death in a skiing accident in 1998.
One of the more well-known facts about Sonny Bono's political legacy is the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. This law, which extended copyright protection, was passed after his death. While named after him, it is not the case that Bono was personally the driving force behind the law. His widow, Mary Bono, who succeeded him in Congress, was one of the initiators.
Sonny Bono's career was diverse, but his success was mixed. His greatest fame stems from his musical collaboration with Cher. His political career was less successful, and his legacy in that area is mainly the copyright law named after him, about which opinions are, however, strongly divided.
