Artist Biography Available in: (Antwerp, Belgium, June 15, 1946). Belgian conductor. At age nine he entered the Antwerp Conservatory where he studied cello and clarinet. He made his professional debut as a cellist at age 14 and gained an early reputation as a chamber music player on radio and television broadcasts. He studied conducting first with Daniel Sternefelt and subsequently with Jacques Pernoo, Hans Swarowsky, and Bruno Maderna. At age 17 he made his conducting debut with the Royal Flemish Opera. During the 1967 season he conducted at the Salzburg Mozarteum. Huybrechts won the 1968 Dimitri Mitropoulos Competition in New York, which resulted in his appointment as Leonard Bernstein’s assistant with the New York Philharmonic and guest appearances with the Los Angeles and Berlin POs. In 1969 he was a prizewinner in the Herbert von Karajan Foundation competition, and in 1970 he became George Szell’s assistant with the Cleveland Orchestra. He was music director and principal conductor of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.
