Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Alexander Malter , born in Moscow, attracted attention while studying with Tatjana Nikolajewa and Oxana Jablonskaja at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. After graduating with an excellent degree in 1969, he began intensive concert activities as a soloist and chamber musician, which also took him to Western Europe and overseas in the mid-1980s. Soon he was one of the leading Russian pianists.

In 1991 Alexander Malter moved to Germany. He is currently one of the best-known interpreters of Russian Romanticism - especially Tchaikovsky, Scriabin and Rachmaninov. He has also made a name for himself as an interpreter of Bach, Haydn, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Liszt. Arvo Pärt occupies a special place among contemporary composers.

In parallel to his solo concert activities, Alexander Malter also devotes himself intensively to chamber music. Here he works particularly closely with members of the Berlin Philharmonic (e.g. in the Vincent Trio or in a duo with various soloists in the orchestra) and soloists from other renowned orchestras. As a soloist and chamber musician, he can be heard regularly in the Berlin Philharmonic and on other well-known stages.

Alexander Malter is co-founder and artistic director of the concert series in Glienicke Palace, which has existed since 1997 and is known far beyond Berlin. Since 2005 he has also been the Artistic Director of the International Autumn Festival for Chamber Music "Festival de musica clásica Port de Sóller" on Mallorca.

Numerous CD and radio recordings. Among the CDs recorded by Alexander Malter, the Arvo Pärt CD "Alina", published by ECM, is one of the international bestsellers. His double CD with works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Chopin, dedicated to the well-known, is also remarkable Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A special recording is the CD with the music (composer: Javier Navarrete) for the Hollywood production "Fireflies in The Garden", largely influenced by Alexander Malter and the Vincent Trio and released by Decca Summer").
Alexander Malter's latest CD recording: “Children's album” op. 39 (Urtext) by Peter Tschaikowsky and “Kinderszenen” op. 15 by Robert Schumann.
