Family Foundation are techno crew from Manchester, England, made famous by their ‘Express Yourself’ white label single, which was selling for upwards of £100 to DJs in 1992. Led by producer Johnny Jay, the track was eventually given an official release a year later on Mancunian label 380. However, it was never originally intended to be a Family Foundation number. Jay had produced the track for an artist called Franschene Allea, but when BMG dropped Omen Records the title never saw the light of day. Instead he covered it when FF were doing demos, utilizing the services of Rachel (vocals) and Shine (ragga vocals). It proved a hugely winning formula. A debut album included tracks like ‘Gunchester’, a comment on Manchester’s rising gang problems, and ‘Red Hot’. This saw a guest appearance from ex-Smiths guitarist Craig Gannon, while over the top of the record Terry Christian and Johnny Rogan discussed the accusations of racism that had recently been directed at ex-Smiths singer Morrissey.
