Ramón López is a Spanish drummer who has been living in France since 1985.
Biography :
Self-taught, he started playing drums in rock bands in the 1970s. A Max Roach concert that he attended in Madrid in 1980 will have a definite influence on his musical career. He moved to jazz and then moved to Paris in January 1985 where he soon became known on the experimental scene.
He recorded several albums in the 1990s with François Cotinaud, whose quartet he joined in 1985: Princess (1990), Pyramides (1992), Opera (1993, duet). In parallel, he undertakes the study of Indian percussion and more specifically tablas. He follows the teaching of Krishna Govinda K.C. and Sri Subhankar Banerjee and will be a professor of Indian music at the C.N.S.M. from 1994 to 2001. He is also passionate about flamenco, introduces a cajón - in addition to tablas - in his drum set and collaborates with Carmen Linares, Esperanza Fernández, Inés Bacán (The invisible city, 2003), Gerardo Núñez , Rafael de Utrera, Chano Domínguez ...
Member of Claude Tchamitchian's septet, he recorded with this ensemble the album Lousadzak in 1994. It is also found on the album of New Lousadzak, Human Songs, in 2006. He befriends the saxophonist Jean-Marc Padovani with which he recorded notably Jazz Angkor (1998).
From 1997 to 2000, he is part of the National Jazz Orchestra conducted by Didier Levallet. He rubs shoulders with, among others, Sophia Domancich who is then on his album Flowers of Peace (2005, with Joëlle Léandre) and who invites him in 2011 on his Snakes and Ladders.
It was also in 1997 that he recorded his first solo album, Eleven Drums Songs, on the Leo Records label. On the same label as in 2000, he published Songs Of The Spanish Civil War, a striking reinterpretation free of Spanish Republican songs, with Thierry Madiot on trombone, Daunik Lazro on saxophone, Paul Rogers on double bass and Beñat Achiary on vocals. Two years later, it is a homage to Rahsaan Roland Kirk that he proposes with Duets 2 Rahsaan Roland Kirk where we find Thierry Madiot, Beñat Achiary, but also Joëlle Léandre, Noël Akchoté, Emmanuel Bex ... and, less jazz, guembri player and Moroccan singer Majid Bekkas. In 2007, still at Leo Records, he released his second solo album, or more precisely in duet with doors recorded by the Finnish trombonist Teppo Hauta-Aho, Swinging Doors.
A man of long-term collaborations, Ramón López often combines work and friendship. The result is a sum of crossed paths where we find faithful partners over time. Thus we find it often - besides the musicians already mentioned - in the company of pianists Christine Wodrascka (two albums in duet), Bruno Angelini with whom he records Silent Cascade (Konnex 2006), New York Session (Noise 2008), Sweet Raws Etcetera Suite (Noise 2010), Ivo Perelman, Baldo Martinez, Agustí Fernández, Barry Guy ...
With these two last, it forms a trio which meets a very favorable reception and saves several albums: Aurora (2006), Morning Glory (2010), A Moment's Liberty (2013), all at Maya Recordings.
Along with Majid Bekkas and pianist Joachim Kühn, he has been training the Kalimba trio since 2007, which brings together European jazz and traditional music from North Africa, and has released three albums on the ACT label: Kalimba (2007), Out Of The Desert (2009) and Chalaba (2011).
Influenced by both Max Roach and Tony Williams, and mixing with these jazz origins a deep knowledge of Indian and flamenco traditions, Ramón López is a prolific and inventive drummer, highly respected in the world of improvised music. He also conducts multidisciplinary artistic projects, including a project with the cartoonist Wozniak (Mama Africa) for a simultaneous improvisation on drums and drawing, or with choreographers.
