Trafassi: A Versatile Party Band

Trafassi, meaning "in another way" in Sranantongo, is a Surinamese-Dutch all-around party band led by singer and percussionist Edgar 'Bugru' Burgos, a nephew of the famous Lieve Hugo. Trafassi is known for their unique blend of Caribbean styles, top 40 hits, and original material. They achieved major success with hits such as "Wasmasjien" (1985), "Lollypop," and "Punani."

History

Trafassi was founded in 1981 by former members of The Happy Boys, the backing band of Lieve Hugo. Initially, the band started as a kaseko formation but soon evolved into a highly sought-after all-around band, performing songs in Sranantongo, Dutch, and English. They released cover versions of soul ballads like "The Train" and "Je t'aime... moi non plus," the latter of which was reimagined under the title "Me Jam," featuring a playful and suggestive lyric about a jar of jam in a shopping bag.

In 1985, the band scored a major hit with "Wasmasjien," a version of the original Papiamento song "Wasmashin," written in 1982 by the CuraƧaoan composer and singer Macario 'Makai' Prudencia in the music style he developed called "Salsa Antiano." "Wasmasjien" was heavily promoted and even received an unofficial music video thanks to the NCRV program "Dit Is Disney."

On May 31, 1985, "Wasmasjien" was selected as the Veronica Alarmschijf on Hilversum 3. It became Trafassi's only major hit, spending eight weeks in the Dutch Top 40 and reaching the 10th position. In the National Hit Parade, the single climbed to the 3rd position. Subsequent singles were rejected by the record company because they didn't sound like "Wasmasjien."

In the late 1990s, there was a split between Burgos and the other members of Trafassi. Burgos formed a new version of Trafassi, with which he still performs today. This new band embarked on a theater tour in 2010 to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

In 2014, the Top Notch label released a compilation CD titled "Wasmasjien en andere poku's" as part of the Sranan Gowtu series. In 2016, the band participated in a tour with other Sranan Gowtu acts and appeared in an episode of "Ali B op volle toeren."
