One of the most compelling voices to come out of New England, Carol Noonan brings passion and poetry to her songs. Backed by a stellar band of musicians including guitarist Duke Levine and drummer Ben Wittman, Carol has never sounded better. Her songs weave the intimacy of folk, the power of alternative rock and the haunting atmosphere of Celtic melodies into an entrancing whole. Long a well-regarded performer on the New England folk scene, Noonan delivers her mix of sharp, compelling original narratives and songs from British and American tradition in a haunting soprano voice as clear as the Maine night sky. She grew up in an Irish-American family in Peabody, Massachusetts, and began singing and playing guitar as a teenager in the 1970s. She studied voice at the New England Conservatory of Music, and while there met two fellow students, Alan Williams and Rick Harris, with whom she formed in 1986 the Maine-based, Richard Thompson-influenced folk-rock band Knots & Crosses. But after building an avid regional following with two well-received CDs, and on the verge of a major national breakthrough, Knots & Crosses came to an end eight years later due to personal and economic issues. Noonan regrouped with the Carol Noonan Band, a guitar-based quartet with which she played through the mid- and late 1990s. More recently, she's performed solo and acoustic, usually backed by one or both of two all-star New England session guitarists, Kevin Barry or Duke Levine.
