Artist Biography

The Hawaiian Islands are known for warm breezes through palm trees, endless beaches, lush volcanoes and soft strains of the ukulele. The Throwdowns are about to add a whole new element to what puts Hawaii on the map. Strong in a number of unexpected ways, The Throwdowns have developed their own indie rock, pop-punk sound that encompasses dance and reggae, all with an identifiable connection to Hawaii. It's this unique sound, hook-laden songs, big attitude and killer live performances that are causing the buzz about this band. Fronted by charismatic Canadian powerhouse vocalist & performer Erin Smith, and rounded out with Maui's favorite airborn punk-rock bass player Kimo Clark, Big Island's guitar & production gem Ola Shaw and the most powerful drummer on Maui, Ian Hollingsworth, the four members create a sound that is much bigger than the sum of their already impressive talents and backgrounds. After ditching out on the cold Canadian tour scene, Erin moved to Maui, quickly meeting up with Ian and Kimo while doing acoustic gigs around the Maui beach town of Kihei. For the first few years the band kicked back Maui style, and stuck to a regimen of casual music playing and surfing. But once confronted with the reality that they were in fact suffering from Polynesian paralysis, the 3 piece kicked it into gear in 2008. Digging into Erin's songs, switching over to electric guitar and letting their enormously bold stage presence fly, the band made a quick Hawaii ascension and there was no turning back. 2008 saw the band officially become "The Throwdowns", and they were given the opportunity to open for 311 at the Lahaina Civic Center and NOFX on the Hawaii leg of their tour. In need of a recording that would do the band justice, Kimo's brother-in-law Ola Shaw flew over to Maui from the Big Island after offering up his production and engineering services. With promises that he was going to kill it, he arrived and met Erin & Ian. He totally delivered on his promise and then some. In two days the band wrapped up two amazing tracks that would be the beginning of their debut album "Don't Slow Down". The trio had decided who the new member of the band should be, and Kimo set to work convincing Ola to join. He did. Now all based on Maui, The Throwdowns are ready to show the world what they got. To be released on August 28th 2009, The Throwdowns debut recording "Don't Slow Down" is highly anticipated and set to deliver the goods. The album encompasses island-chill and punk-rock ruckus, all at the same time. With classic pop songwriting chops and dance beats to keep even fans of club music satisfied, "Don't Slow Down" is a stellar beginning to The Throwdowns' career. Engineered and mixed by Ola Shaw and mastered by Grammy Winner Don Grossinger (Ziggy Marley, Rage Against The Machine, Maroon 5, Franz Ferdinand), you'll want to mark August 28th, 2009 on your calendar so you can pick it up the first chance you get. While the Hawaiian islands bask in the leisurely pace of endless summer, The Throwdowns are saying "Don't Slow Down". Can you keep up with them?
