Established in 1952, Shanghai Traditional Instrument Orchestra, is one of the oldest organized ethnic orchestras in China. The orchestra consists of over 80 outstanding professional performers, including musical directors, soloists, and vocalists. Some of the reputable members include Yude Sun, Chunling Lu, Ziqian Zhang, Zuying Xiang, Weifeng Ming, Baiyong Xiao, Sunfa Yu, Changyuan Wang, Liangxing Tang and Yi Gong. Following the success of "The night of Golden Autumn " concert by Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in last October and the "Piano Recital Concert " by Yundi Li in April, Agis Center, PUAA-DC, and Institute for Global Chinese Affairs of University of Maryland are presenting another exciting event - "Legendary Chinese Traditional Music Concert" by the visiting Shanghai Traditional Instrument Orchestra. This is another outstanding performance in the Washington Metropolitan Area that you can't afford to miss! Shanghai Traditional Instrument Orchestra has won Awards in Shanghai's Spring and Shanghai Art Festivals. The orchestra is also well-known overseas from their numerous international performances. From large symphonic performances to small Southern Chinese Silk and Bamboo Music, Cantonese Music and other small scaled performances, the Orchestra will present its excellent skills and seamless cooperation in performance to audiences. Mr. Yongjie Wang is The Musical Director and Chief Conductor of the Shanghai Traditional Instrument Orchestra (STIO). Mr. Wang first conducted the Orchestra of Shanghai Opera House for the drama "The Story of Harbor" in 1969 and later became the Chief Conductor for the Shanghai Film Orchestra in 1977. As a Film Orchestra conductor, he has produced over 100 music recording performances for movies, documentaries, and even hundreds episodes of TV series. Other outstanding artists of the visiting STIO include Xiaoci Luo, a young Guzheng performer and winner of national competitions; Haibo Qiao, Panpipes performer; Junqiao Tang, a Flute artist who performed for the Oscar-winner movie "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon"; Bin Yu, the Pipa performer; Kaikai Duan, an outstanding Erhu performer; Buo Liu, a Da Ruan performer; and Chenyun Hu, a young Suo Na performer. In early 2001, The STIO performed successfully in the Golden Hall of Vienna, Austria, during their tour in Europe in celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year. The concert was named as "Concert for the Year of Goat" and received excellent coverage in European media. The STIO has also performed in the United States, Germany, Japan, France, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries, totaling over 40 countries and regions.
