Amilcare Ponchielli (Italian: August 31, 1834 – January 16, 1886) was an Italian composer, mainly of operas.
Amilcare Ponchielli studied at the Milan Conservatory where he taught himself at the end of his life.
His early career is disappointing. Coming out of a teaching post at the Milan Conservatory which he had won in a competition, he had to accept odd jobs in small towns. He composed several operas without success at the beginning. Despite these disappointments, he gained extensive experience as a conductor (capobanda) in Plaisance and Cremona , arranging and composing more than 200 works for harmony orchestra.
The turning point in his career was the great success of the revised version of I promessi sposi in 1872, which earned him a contract with music publisher G. Ricordi & Co. and a musical establishment at the Conservatory and at La Scala. The role of Lina in the revised version is sung by the singer Teresina Brambilla, whom he married in 1874. Their son Annibale would become a music critic and a minor composer. The ballet Le due gemelle (1873) confirms its success.
At the conservatory, he has, among others, Giacomo Puccini among his students. In 1881, he was appointed master of the chapel in Bergamo . His operas , performed with great success, follow the tradition of Giuseppe Verdi .
