One of the first computer-gaze producers memory gateways comes to Gorgeous Lights with brand new 26-track album «distant fantasies». memory gateways project can also be described as «dream music» because unlike other traditional computer-gaze projects that usually simulate broken computer sounds by manipulating repetitive short samples, memory gateways feels more like a hazy dream from distant memory.
«distant fantasies» comparing to memory gateways previous works sounds bit different in virtue of using various plunderphonics tactics. Starting with classic piano samples on «familiar», «corridors» and «perspectives» this album can remind you a mood of artist’s previous works like their half of «vivid imagery» (2016 split with virtual highway) that had more surrealistic tones due to combination of classical music samples and television themed concept. «imagination» and «disappearing» are more «into dreams»-styled tracks that may cause heavy slumber feelings in a good way. By playing with short samples that consist of repetitive phrases and lyrics on «longing», «internal» and «free» memory gateways returns to one of the earliest vaporwave (and/or even proto-vaporwave) techniques similar to «eccojams». One of the closing tracks «recollections» could be considered as solid piece of ambient by its slow, somber and melancholic melody that evokes nostalgic feelings and truly feels like a sweet dream of «surfing through memories» is going to its another end.
«distant fantasies» has carefully arranged narrative that can dig deeper in memories or emotions depending on listener’s experience. Short, hazy and even noisy samples create bright, vivid picture of past days that we usually love to call as «better, easy days» what makes «distant fantasies» a pleasant journey with nostalgia evoking more and more every time as a next track comes up.
