User Album Review
Dirty Mind was written immediately in the wake of Prince’s stint as the support act for Rick James’s Fire It Up Tour. It was in fact recorded in Prince’s basement at home in Lake Minnetonka, in the spring of 1980.
Unlike his first two albums, Prince is accompanied with fellow band members providing vocals and instrumentation on the title track and Head, and writing credits are shared on the title track and Party up. Dirty Mind sold 500,000 copies (receiving the RIAA’s Gold rating) and peaked at number 45 on the Billboard charts and viewed as a disappointment to Warner Brothers. In the UK the album failed to chart, it eventually saw its chart debut in 2016 in the week following Prince’s death, it reached position 61. It was critically acclaimed and since listed by Rolling Stone Magazine 204th in their top 500 albums of all time. For the cover photo the backdrop to the album features an upturned spring bed. The sexual overtones of Dirty Mind caused great division in the band and critics alike, it was racy because Prince was single at the time and wanting female company. The lyrics were not to everyone’s taste at the time.
