I Therion sono un gruppo musicale heavy metal svedese, formatosi nel 1987 a Väsby, un sobborgo di Stoccolma. Sono considerati tra i maggiori esponenti del symphonic metal.

Nel 1988 Christofer Johnsson formò una band chiamata Megatherion prendendo spunto dall'album To Mega Therion del 1985 dei Celtic Frost. In seguito trasformò il nome in Therion (θηρίον), che in greco significa "bestia selvaggia", nome preso in prestito dal maestro Therion della teosofia esoterica di Thelema, a sua volta mutuato dalla nomenclatura filomatica. All'inizio il suono della band era orientato verso il death metal ma si è poi "contaminato" con elementi orchestrali, canti dai timbri e dalle melodie vicine alla lirica e da elementi gotici. I loro testi trattano principalmente di mitologia, occultismo, Satanismo e religioni pagane.
