Album Description
Available in:
With their third release, ‘Tundra’, Enablers continue with their unique brew of poignant spoken narrative and dynamic-heavy post-rock soundscapes. With instrumentals that utilise the emotive resonance of the guitar in the most heart-rendering of fashions, the four-piece craft out a set of vamp-like, alcohol-addled rock ditties that crash and recoil in a wave-like manner, serving to accentuate the ever poetic and deeply-delivered narrative. As moody and three-dimensional as Slint, and taking into account the aesthetic laid down by the ThreeOneG school of mathpunkrock, Enablers charge forward with a set of tracks that capture the explosive and raw power of their debut whilst combining it with the full-bodied dynamics explored in ‘Output Negative Space’. From slower and more textural pieces like ‘Tundra’ and the hidden eleventh track which see the group create miniaturised pseudo-movies through sound, to the all out crash, bang and wallop of tracks like ‘The Achievement’ and ‘Bells’, ‘Tundra’ proves to be a thoroughly well constructed and all-encompassing release.

The key to Enablers continued ability to excite and spark off emotive feelings in ones mindset is thanks to the hypnotic and exotic melodies they craft. These glistening and enchanting melodics are found littered across Tundra (and all their releases) but some are unfortunately explored and progressed less than others. Combining this with haunting and totally off-kilter narratives that are buoyed by the band’s ability to switch instantly into full-bodied math-rock convulsions makes for an ‘event’ rather than a ‘listen’. ‘Februaries’ is a perfect example of encapsulating all their strengths and (very slight) frailties in one piece. Being an exercise in emotive conditioning, the rocksteady and hypnotic bob and sway of its liquid gold melodies suck one in with its melancholic fervour before all-to-briefly disappearing in a collision of distorted debris as Simonelli’s authoritative vocals rise in stature.

As an exercise in pressure and its release, ‘Tundra’ ultimately shows a band who are now as comfortable as ever with their style of spoken-word instrumental rock. The timing of introspective passages and destruction-bent freakout’s is as slick as its ever been, making for a propriety sound which captures the drunken and unstable majesty of Slint and The For Carnation whilst incorporating the rock electricity generated by Shellac and The Birthday Party. ‘Tundra’ will be issued as a limited edition of 400 vinyl and 1200cd, the latter being for Europe only and being packed in handmade & silkscreened wooden boxes containing some special surprises!
