Sophie Ellis-Bextor revient vers la fin 2006. Elle devient en effet le nouveau visage de la chaîne de magasin de vêtements Monsoon, en remplacement de Sophie Dahl. Elle sera aussi dans un premier temps choisie pour participer à une campagne publicitaire pour le compte de la marque de lingerie Agent Provocateur, mais c'est finalement Kylie Minogue qui remportera le contrat.
Mais c'est avec l'annonce d'un nouveau single et d'un futur prochain album que Sophie fait son grand retour sur le devant de la scène. Avant que l'album ne se soit lancé, deux singles vont être commercialisés. Dans un premier temps, Catch you va servir de fer de lance. Il sort le 19 février 2007 au Royaume-Uni et réussit à se classer 18e dans les charts anglais rien que par les téléchargement pour finalement se hisser jusqu'à la 8e place. Le deuxième single, Me and my imagination, sorti le 14 mai 2007, aura lui un succès plus mitigé avec un pic à la 23e place.
C'est le 21 mai 2007 que l'album Trip the light fantastic est disponible dans les bacs. Il se positionnera à la 7e place des charts. Celui-ci contient 12 titres (14 pour la version britannique) et se situe musicalement entre la pop et le disco. Pour ce nouvel opus, Sophie s'est entourée de Shelly Poole (ancien membre du groupe Alisha's Attic), Dan Gillespie Sells de The Feeling, Cathy Dennis (qui a composé Can't get you out of my head pour Kylie Minogue) et Kerin Smith (ancien membre du groupe theaudience).
Le prochain extrait sera Today the sun's on us et sortira le 6 août au Royaume-Uni malgré la volonté de Sophie de sortir le titre If you go. Le clip vidéo a été réalisé par Sophie Muller, qui avait déjà réalisé la vidéo de Catch you. On retrouvera un titre inédit sur la face B du single, Duel. Le single a reçu de bons échos de la part de la presse.
Sophie était présente le jeudi 28 juin 2007 à Paris, au Carrousel du Louvre, pour promouvoir l'album à l'occasion de l'anniversaire du magazine Tribu Move. En partenariat avec Virgin Megastore, elle était donc présente pour interpréter quatre titres dont Me and my imagination (mais pas Catch you), qui est donc le single choisi pour lancer l'album en France, celui-ci s'étant classé en première semaine à la 81e du Top Album France.

Great pop albums are few and far between, but after a three year break there were great hopes from the new album from the poshest girl in pop ”“ Sophie Ellis Bextor.
With her indie days well and truly behind her, the much maligned Sophie has always been totally happy to embrace her new twinkly world. What album could you name that ends with a grotesquely camp, yet sassy, homage to 50s sci-fi courtesy of the B52s? In fact it’s difficult to expect anything but glistening disco-pop from an album with a title such as Trip The Light Fantastic almost screaming out AMAZING in sparkly, flashing pink letters.
While “Catch You” gave us a grittier Sophie, and the sprightly “Me & My Imagination” recalled days of "Read My Lips" Sophie, disco is the overriding sound here. Reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys, the staccato “New York City Lights” and the hip shaking “If I Can’t Dance” transport us to a world where the glitter ball never stops spinning. But if you thought they weren’t pushing pop to outrageous limits enough, “China Heart” is literally one of the most ridiculous songs we have ever heard. Pulsating with synths Giorgio Moroder would be proud of, it reminds you of “I Feel Love” coupled with a dark, futuristic overtone.
And while you may expect tracks from pop royalty such as Xenomania and Hannah Robinson to stand out, it’s actually the two very different songs contributed by Dan Gillespie-Sells of The Feeling that soar high above the rest. Accomplished at writing the perfect feel-good hit for his own band, Dan’s lite-reggae “Only One” and the uplifting “Love Is Here” leave us with the feeling that Sophie’s “China Heart” might be warming, and that despite the fact that we’ve no doubt they were written together over a Royal Doulton pot of tea, Sophie was actually having fun while singing them. The radio friendly “Love Is Here” even has a trademark Feeling guitar solo and has summer hit written all over it.
Whether there is room for such a manicured, glossy pop star in the musical landscape of 2007 is a different matter. Sophie’s certainly made the pop record she wants to, and if it all sounds a tad 2002 then so be it. Good luck to her.
