Mentre Outlandos D'Amour fece conoscere al mondo il trio, Regatta de Blanc del 1979 contribuì a confermare i Police come star. Spesso considerato il miglior album di Sting, Stuart Copeland e Andy Summers, Regatta... è più atmosferico del debutto della band, meno punk e più controllato.
Questo secondo album è l'SOS della band al mondo, con il singolo ''Message in a Bottle'' che riceve il suo riscontro, occupando il primo posto della classifica britannica per quattro settimane. La chitarra arpeggiata e flangiata, marchio di fabbrica di Summers, apre il brano e l'album e si intreccia con facilità all'immaginario tagliente di Sting.
''Message...'' non è l'unico trionfo commerciale dell'album. ''Walking On The Moon'' mescola ritmi reggae con i testi schietti e sobri in cui i Police eccellono. Anche questa canzone è arrivata al primo posto.
Altri ritmi dub seguono in ''The Bed's Too Big Without You'', ma questa volta con un effetto più soporifero. Riporta la dolcezza nell'album (e in seguito è stata coverizzata dalla cantante reggae Sheila Hilton nel 1981). Ricorda cosa significhi sentire la mancanza di un partner.
Ma a volte i ragazzi si distaccano dalle loro influenze reggae. Quello che si ottiene ascoltando la title track è un miscuglio di world music - una frenesia indefinibile senza parole che suona come se i ragazzi si stessero divertendo e che finisce troppo presto.
Come sempre, i testi di Sting sono molto più profondi di quanto sembrino. La sua voce strozzata e le chitarre echeggianti di "Bring On The Night" incarnano il desiderio di un uomo di giungere alla fine del suo tempo. Il verso "The evening spreads itself against the sky" (La sera si stende contro il cielo) è inconsapevolmente tratto da "The Love Song Of J Alfred Prufrock" (Il canto d'amore di J. Alfred Prufrock) di TS Eliot, una poesia che tratta a sua volta di frustrazione e alienazione.
Tre brani di Copeland, ''Does Everyone Stare'', ''Contact'' e ''On Any Other Day'', si distinguono per la loro discordanza e il loro umorismo nero. I primi due si concentrano sullo spazio che esiste tra gli individui, mentre lo stesso batterista si occupa della voce in "On Any Other Day", un'interpretazione umoristica della crisi di mezza età.
Regatta de Blanc non poteva che venire dopo Outlandos D'Amour. I valori di produzione sono più alti, più intricati e alcune musiche sono più adulte - incorporando influenze di world music e jazz, oltre che di reggae e roots.

Whilst Outlandos D'Amour introduced the world to the trio, 1979’s Regatta de Blanc helped confirm the Police as stars. Often seen as Sting, Stuart Copeland and Andy Summers’ best album, Regatta… is more atmospheric than the band’s debut; less punky and more controlled.
This second album is the band’s SOS to the world, with the single '’Message in a Bottle’' receiving its own feedback by commanding the number one spot in the UK charts for four weeks. Summers' trademark arpeggiated and flanged guitar opens the track and album and weaves into Sting’s sharp imagery with ease.
‘’Message…’’ is not the only commercial triumph on the album. ‘’Walking On The Moon’ blends reggae beats with the frank and understated lyrics that the Police excel at. It also made it to number one.
More dub beats follow in ‘’The Bed's Too Big Without You’’ but this time with a more soporific affect. It brings the mellowness back into the album (and was later covered by reggae singer Sheila Hilton in 1981). It reminds you what it's like to miss a partner.
But the boys do break out from their reggae influences at times. What you get when you listen to the title track is a blur of world music - an indefinable wordless frenzy which just sounds like the boys having a blast and ends far too soon.
As ever, Sting’s lyrics run much deeper than they appear. His strangulated voice and the echoing guitars on ‘’Bring On The Night’’, epitomise one man’s desire to come to the end of his time. The line ‘The evening spreads itself against the sky’ is self-consciously taken from TS Eliot’s ‘’The Love Song Of J Alfred Prufrock’’, a poem which itself deals with frustration and alienation.
Three Copeland tracks ‘’Does Everyone Stare’’, ‘’Contact’’‘ and ‘’On Any Other Day’’ stand out for their discordance and black humour. The first two focus on the space that exists between individuals while the drummer himself takes over the vocals on "On Any Other Day" a humorous take on mid-life crisis.
Regatta de Blanc could only have come after Outlandos D’Amour. The production values are higher, more intricate and some of the music more grown up – incorporating world music and jazz influences as well as reggae and roots.
