Bleach est le premier album studio du groupe américain de grunge Nirvana, sorti le 15 juin 1989 sur le label Sub Pop en cassette et en vinyle 7", puis au format CD au Royaume-Uni par Tupelo Records. Après la déferlante Nevermind en 1991, Sub Pop et Geffen Records ressortent conjointement une édition le 15 décembre 1992 avec deux morceaux en plus, devenant ainsi la meilleure vente de l'histoire du premier label avec plus de 1,7 million d'exemplaires vendus outre-Atlantique en 2009 (disque de platine), avant l'édition proposée pour son vingtième anniversaire, qui propose en plus une dizaine de chansons enregistrées lors du concert au Pine Street Theater de Portland le 9 février 1990. Ce succès lui vaut également d'être certifié double disque d'or en France avec plus de 200 000 ventes.
Alors que Nirvana n'est pas la préoccupation principale de Sub Pop, le groupe enregistre son premier album studio au cours de six sessions et une trentaine d'heures au Reciprocal Recording avec Jack Endino en ingénieur du son entre la fin décembre 1988 et le mois de janvier 1989 pour la modique somme de 606,17 $. La facture est payée par Jason Everman, un ami et fan du groupe, lui permettant d'être crédité comme second guitariste et d'apparaître sur la pochette du disque alors qu'il n'a joué aucune note. Il les accompagne ensuite sur la tournée américaine de dix-neuf dates avant d'être éconduit par Kurt Cobain, le leader du groupe. Malgré une promotion proche du néant, Nirvana se rend sur le continent européen, précédé du maxi Blew, afin de porter le son de Seattle, la ville d'origine du groupe, de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique.
Bénéficiant de la nouvelle popularité du groupe, l'album commence enfin à se vendre et la critique à s'y intéresser malgré les problèmes récurrents de batteur que connaît le trio. Bleach, dont l'unique single est Love Buzz, est marqué par des guitares vives, une basse sourde, une batterie explosive et un chant alternant rugissements primaux et voix suave. Bien que Kurt Cobain estime que le son produit résulte du souhait de leur label, ses talents d'écriture et sa capacité à composer des chansons pop, notamment sur la ballade About a Girl, sont mis en avant. Certains morceaux comme Blew laissent déjà entrevoir la voie du succès que le groupe suivra pour arriver à Nevermind deux ans plus tard.

Recorded for a smidgen over $600, some Nirvana die-hards argue that Bleach is Nirvana’s finest work. Such connoisseur’s say that while Nevermind is revered as the soundtrack for ‘Generation X’, its reluctant spokesman, Kurt Cobain, shows his true colours in Bleach ”“ before the unwanted fame that ultimately cost his life took a hold.
Sophomore release, Nevermind, gripped the music world and thrust Cobain into the celebrity role he seemed to detest, but it also triggered interest in Bleach and uncovered the gems that had been hidden, with original sales of just 6,000 copies.
Subsequent Nirvana albums had a lyrical complexity to them, matching the personal struggles that Cobain went through whilst writing them. Bleach differs since its quality lies in the simplicity of the songs that deliver the crux of the album ”“ the boredom of growing up as a confused teenager in a sleepy part of conservative America.
Kicking off with the dirty sound of “Blew” and “Floyd The Barber” ”“ a couple of furious, dark and muddy openers ”“ the albums’ stand-out track follows. “All About A Girl” is a ballad that should be used as a template by today’s Emo tyros, with Cobain’s superb throaty vocal over a much poppier sound than much of what we are normally used to from Nirvana.
“School” is the classic example of the minimalist grunge, with just four lines hidden under a filthy base and the album reaches a thrilling crescendo with the angry duo of “Big Cheese” and “Downer”.
But it is what’s missing that makes Bleach important ”“ Chad Channing’s hit-and-miss drumming before Dave Grohl took over the sticks and the frankly awful rushed production job that leaves the album full of feedback and distortion. Combined, these two factors are what make Bleach special, adding a chaotic and grimy feel that Nirvana, as the darlings of the Seattle grunge scene, stood for.
