Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
The SolaZul project is spearheaded by Toronto musician/producer D’Arcy McGuire, working closely alongside singer/songwriter RUBI, who adds a sultry mashup of English, Spanish and Brazilian-Portuguese vocals to the group. Additional acoustic elements are rounded out by Toronto guitarist Juan Dino Toledo.

Prolific Toronto junglist crew VISIONARY (aka Marcus Visionary and Nemesis), add their unmistakable riddim’s and remixing talents to the group, resulting in a brilliant collection of thumpin’ breaks with tasty Latin undertones. Visionary’s extensive discography boasts releases on top UK labels such as Metalheadz, Soul:r, 31 Records, Karma, Architecture , Flex and Yard, as well as Toronto labels On Point, Vinyl Syndicate, Oscillate and Hustlin’ Beats. Their remix of the SolaZul track Encanto had been getting steady play for nearly a year on white-label before release, most notably from DJ Bailey on BBC’s 1Xtra in the UK.

Interview with D’Arcy McGuire – May 2008

What inspired you to make this record?
The song 'Remember' got it started. It was like another color came out of the sound with Adam on Vox and Kai on the Horns and it was ON after that. Why does Rubi mash up different languages in each song?
Because she likes to, so much that I asked her if she'd sing the song 'Jamais' in French, she graciously agreed and nailed it!
Who are the guests on the album and what is interesting about each one? LOTS of guests it seems... Bryden is in Feist's band whom everybody seems to be very familiar with now 1 2 3 4..... but he's been in EVERYBODY's bands for years now... and he's played on some awesome stuff so I asked him if he'd join us in writing Sinfonia Del Sol. He did a really incredible job bringing stuff in and interpreting Dino's melody.

Mista D of The Salads is one of my good buddies and I play in a band with him doing Bob Marley Covers (Mob Barley and the Railers btw..) and he sings like one of the baddest and he was a welcome addition on two tracks on this record. One of them ‘Be There 4 U’ is what I'm used to from D; send him an instrumental and BAM! what comes out makes those hairs on the back of your neck stick up. We wrote that one for his new born son Declan.
Adam Bailie sings on 'Remember' and he's a guy whose talent I've truly admired since I've met him, he's quite an awesome singer and he brought somethin’ somethin’ to that song. One of my favorites on the record for sure. Nick Londono is an awesome keyboard player, multi-instrumentalist and producer, by the time the years done he'll probably have a record or two of his own tunes as well.... that Nick is something. He plays the Rhodes solo on Poquito De Amor, classic Nick…shows up with a bang and takes over on keys. Why does SolaZul explore so many genres?
Mostly because we don't really have a set style to agree on most times. We didn't come together because we liked the same stuff, we came together and wrote almost for the opposite reason, to see if it would work. It’s been like that since 'Sola Bossa'. Dino and I have a passion for Led Zeppelin and Bauhaus and I hear it in SolaZul in small flashes but its hardly the scenario or axiom, its just everybody comes with their strengths and the sound comes from trying to make it sound cohesive.
Any plans to perform live or is this a studio project now?
This is primarily a studio project, although I’m assembling the live band right now…I do believe we'll do some stuff live but its something that seems to completely take a less prominent role. Everybody has a band, I'm writing music night and day for other artists and producers, so its rare that I can even pull these cats from their usual schedules of playing all the time. Bryden is playing lots worldwide with Feist and others, and Dino is either touring or laying it down nightly in Toronto and Adam loves to play all the time so he does 4-5 nights a week These are busy guys I find, but that what makes all so interesting to me is that these dudes have so little in common on stage it would seem at face value, but it mashes up together in the studio tight because they're all excellent players and minds and that makes ALL the difference in my opinion.... and then mounds of patience to make it all fit and glow.
Who are your influences? Marvin Gaye, Miles, Gilberto, Joni, Bob Marley, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Neil Young, The Police, J Dilla, Carlos Santana, The Mars Volta, Roni Size, Massive Attack, Led Zeppelin, Burt Bacharach, Paco De Lucia, Jaco Pastorius.. all the dudes and ladies who fearlessly write awesome stuff.
Your current top 4? Common, Bob Marley, Soulive, Interpol.
Last live show you saw? Charlie Haden (Jack Black’s Father-in-Law) ....... Village Vanguard NYC

CD, vinyl or mp3? MP3 is the way for me... plus I NEVER forget what I want to buy now, its just remembering afterwards and buy many others but not that one. .
