Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Priya Mitchell grew up in Oxford and studied with David Takeno at the Yehudi Menuhin School and with Zachar Bron in Germany. She was then chosen as the British representative of the European Concert Halls Organisation ‘Rising Stars' Series, giving recitals in Paris (Cité de la Musique), Vienna (Konzerthaus), Frankfurt (Alte Oper), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Brussels (Palais des Beaux-Arts), Birmingham (Symphony Hall), London(Wigmore Hall) and New York (Carnegie Hall). This success led to highly acclaimed tours and performances with, amongst others, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Philharmonia.
She has worked with conductors such as Sir Andrew Davis, Yuri Temirkanov, Richard Hickcox, Emmanuel Krivine, Heinrich Schiff and Yan Pascal Tortelier. Abroad, Priya has worked with the Belgian Radio and Television Philharmonic, Sinfonia Varsovia, the Polish Chamber Orchestra, Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the Deutsche Sinfonie-Orchester. As a recitalist and chamber musician, Priya has performed extensively at international music festivals including Schleswig-Holstein, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Kuhmo, Lockenhaus, Risør, Heimbach, Ravinia, Lugano, Cheltenham, Bath and Stavanger.
In 2008/2009 she performed in chamber music concerts with Maria João Pires at the Wigmore Hall, in the Eindhoven Festival and at the Schloss Elmau Chamber Music Festival. She has also performed at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Jewish Museum in Berlin, and at the Trondheim and Kuhmo festivals and as a soloist with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Krakow and Slowakian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Ljubliana.
She also opened the Cheltenham festival with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Vaughan Williams' ‘Lark Ascending' and she will return again this year. She will also perform Fazil Say's '1001 Nights in the Harem' violin concerto in concerts in Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey. A highly committed chamber musician and interpreter she continues to work with, among others, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Natalie Clein, Ilya Gringolts, Nicolas Altsteadt, Polina Leschenko, Alexander Lonquich and Fazil Say. Her recent performances in Germany were featured in the Süddeutsche Zeitung in which Egbert Tholl declared that: ‘Mitchell's playing is highly emotional and intellectually curious ... yet very tender and at the same time outrageously wild, raw and passionate.'
This year also sees the 10th anniversary of Priya's highly acclaimed Oxford Chamber Music Festival. Her artistic directorship of this extraordinary festival inspired The Daily Telegraph to call it 'a musical miracle.'
