Olivier Charlier, born February 17, 1961 in Albert (Somme), is a French violinist.
Admitted at the age of 10 to the National Superior Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris Olivier Charlier won, four years later, a first violin prize in the class of Jean Fournier, and then decided to improve in the class of Pierre Doukan in violin and in Jean Hubeau's chamber music. It was during this period at the CNSM that he met Nadia Boulanger, who, interested in his early gifts, will present it to Yehudi Menuhin and Henryk Szeryng. He will offer him a scholarship in 1976.
He won many international competitions: Munich at age 17, Montreal at age 18, the Helsinki Sibelius competition at age 19, the two major French competitions Long-Thibaud (2nd Grand Prix) and Georges Enesco of SACEM at age 20, Indianapolis (4th prize) at 21, not forgetting of course the Young Concert Artists International Audition won in New York in 1989 when he was 28 years old.
Olivier Charlier is thus propelled on the biggest musical scenes of the whole world, accompanied by French and foreign orchestras (Orchester national de France, Orchester de Paris, Orchester de la Tonhalle of Zurich, Orchester of the Residence of The Hague, Orchester philharmonique de London, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg and Saarbrücken Radio Stations, Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic, Zagreb Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony Orchestra , Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra).
His concerts take him from the Americas (United States, Canada, Mexico) to Asia (Japan, Thailand, Malaysia) and Africa (South Africa), while focusing on Europe ( France, England, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, ...).
Since 1981, Olivier Charlier teaches young students of the CNSM in Paris. He began as an assistant to Pierre Doukan's violin class, as well as assistant to Jean Hubeau's chamber music class, and was appointed violin teacher in 1992. He is assisted by Johanna Matkowska.
He plays on a violin by Carlo Bergonzi (en) from 1747.
