Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Richard Galliano studied piano and accordion from the age of 4, with his father Lucien Galliano, accordionist and teacher.
Particularly gifted and invested, he quickly joined the Conservatoire de Nice, then directed by the organist Pierre Cochereau,
and follows classes in harmony, counterpoint and ... trombone. He won a First Prize in 1969 for this instrument.
He arrives in Paris in 1975 and meets Claude Nougaro where he will become the friend, the accordionist
but also the conductor, until 1983. The author and the composer were found.
They get along very well.
From this close collaboration will be born many songs that are part of the heritage
French songs, such as Allée des brouillards, Sailboats, Vie Violence ...
The second crucial meeting will take place in 1980, with the composer and bandoneonist.
Argentinian Astor Piazzolla. Astor will strongly encourage him to create the French "New Musette",
as he himself previously invented the "New Tango" Argentine.
During his long and prolific career, Richard Galliano records more than 50 albums under his name.
He collaborates in parallel with an impressive number of prestigious artists and musicians:
Chet Baker, Eddy Louiss, Carter Ron, Wynton Marsalis, Charlie Haden,
Gary Burton, Michel Portal, Toots Thielemans, Kurt Elling, for jazz.
Serge Reggiani, Claude Nougaro, Barbara, Juliette Greco,
Dick Annegarn, George Moustaki, Allain Leprest, Charles Aznavour,
Serge Gainsbourg, for the French song.
Nigel Kennedy for classical repertoire and a large number of orchestras.
During his tours around the world, he performs in the most prestigious theaters:
the Lincoln Center of New York, the Victoria Hall of Geneva, the Accademia Santa Cecilia of Rome,
the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Marinsky Theater of Saint-Petersburg,
The new Philharmonies of Hamburg and Paris ...
In 1997 Richard Galliano is awarded a Victoire de la Musique Jazz for his album New York Tango.
It is again in 1998 for a new Victory of the Jazz Music for the album Blow Up,
recorded duet with Michel Portal. In 2009, he was named Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters.
In 2010, he received the SACEM Prize for Best Pedagogic Book for the Method
of Accordion he made with his father Lucien Galliano, Editions Lemoine.
He recorded a Bach album at Deutsche Grammophon in 2010.
This album breaks the classic sales records and exceeds 70,000 copies sold.
He is appointed Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2011.
He wins the Victoire de la Musique Classique in 2014 and also receives the
Award for Best Composer of the Year 2014.
Continuing more and more frequently the recording of classical repertoires,
records in 2016 a new album, dedicated this time to the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The year 2016 also sees the release of a new album in New Jazz Musette quartet released
under the Italian label Ponderosa music & art, thirty after the album Spleen which introduced
precisely in 1985 the musical concept named New Jazz Musette.
In 2016 he is promoted to Officer of the National Order of Merit by the President of the Republic François Hollande.
