Shem McCauley & Simon Rogers
This UK-based remix, DJ and production team comprises Shem McCauley and Simon Rogers. During the mid-80s, McCauley (as DJ Streets Ahead) was a leading turntablist in the UK, working with Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass) and Norman Cook, remixing tracks by artists such as James Brown, Roxanne Shanté, Was (Not Was) and Digital Underground, and touring with the She Rockers, Bomb The Bass and Beats International. While studying in Brighton, McCauley discovered the burgeoning house scene and became involved in various dance music nights on the south coast of England. When McCauley met Rogers in the early 90s, they worked as Ramp, scoring major club hits with ‘Rock The Discotek’ and ‘Stomp’ on the Brighton-based Loaded Records, and remixing such high-profile artists as D:Ream, Sister Sledge, Yazz, Boy George and Armand Van Helden. Rogers spent some time producing artists including the Lightning Seeds, Boy George, the Fall and Pete Murphy. McCauley had club hits with a number of Slacker singles before Rogers returned to work with him on ‘Scared’ and ‘Your Face’ in 1997. ‘Scared’, an epic trance track notable for its use of sampled snatches of children’s voices and live bass guitar, was a great hit with leading UK DJs such as Sasha and John Digweed. When given a full release, it became a UK Top 40 hit, as did the follow up, ‘Your Face’, which followed the same basic blueprint. They made numerous live appearances at clubs at festivals in Europe, including the Ministry Of Sound. The duo also completed remix work including the Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ in 1998. McCauley returned to DJing internationally in 1998 and took up a bi-monthly residency at Miami’s famous Groovejet club. The duo continue to remix numerous singles by other artists such as Breeder and Junkie XL and numerous of their productions and remixes can be found on the Global Underground mix compilation series by DJs such as Nick Warren, Dave Seaman and Sasha and Digweed.
