Opposite Sex formed in Gisborne, an isolated town on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Lucy Hunter had previously performed as part of Connan Mockasin's live band. She formed Opposite Sex with Tim Player; he took up drumming after finding a drumkit dumped on the side of a road. The band was fleshed out as a trio with the addition of self-taught guitarist Fergus Taylor.
In 2011, Lucy and Tim moved to the South Island city of Dunedin, where the band performs both as duo with no guitar and as a full trio when Fergus is available. The full trio released their debut album Opposite Sex in November 2011.
