Desiderii Marginis was formed by Johan Levin in 1993 in Mjölby, Sweden as a solo project. The initial intention was to release just a few demotapes with material that failed to fit into the repertoire of his main band at the time The Wounded Meadow. The first three tapes “Consecrare”, “Via Peregrinus” and “Triptych” were released in limited editions of a modest handfull. Some of these songs later appeared in new versions on Songs Over Ruins, released on the loveable Cold Meat Industry label.
After the first full CD Desiderii Marginis was already known throughout the dark-ambient scene. Comparing the new project in the first place with fellow label Raison D’Etre, critics noted some notable differences - first, much more attention to the rhythmic structure, as well as completely different, different from the music of Peter Andersson’s post-apocalyptic atmosphere more suited to work beginning of the 90th of Brighter Death Now, In Slaughter Natives or Archon Satani. Figuratively as one of the reviewers - “Songs Over Ruins” - this hour tour around the world, have ceased to exist, where all life is ended, the road will not find anything alive, only endless dust and ashes, skeletons of dead trees, but the ruins of collapsed buildings and broken machines. “
The next album “Deadbeat” was released only four years later, in 2001 th. The disc combines the bleak industrial environment, samples of religious chants and well thought-out electronics, and it does not look like a collage, and each party in each track has been verified, exciting and exhilarating.
The break between the second and third album, called “Strife”, was also significant - about three years. The new CD was dedicated to “reflection on the deplorable human passion always and everywhere to easily get involved in any conflict,” and music was not so much a continuation of the ideas of the first two albums, but more a kind of soundtrack, differing steep in ambient and a smaller share of neoclassicism. While the album includes one of the best and favorite of many things the project “The Sweet Hereafter”, a special delight from the audience, he did not call.
However, in parallel, Johan worked on, perhaps his most successful disc - “That Which Is Tragic And Timeless”, released a year later, in the 2005th, and the best tracks of strength and he gave him. In contrast to the rather experimental “Strife”, a new work was full of beautiful melodies and had absolutely amazing absorbing atmosphere, she touched the hearts of listeners of various genres. Blurring the boundaries between styles, in addition to the usual dark ambient project, there were also dark-folk guitar and Tibetan sacred mantra, and in the spirit of the spherical electronics Inade, and much more, all of which together make up the wonderful world where everything was “tragic and timeless, “that is so, what according to the American artist Mark Rothko, inspired Johan to this work, and should only be an object of interest of the creator of a work of art.
Desiderii Marginis album brought a new level of creative skill and popularity. Released two years disc “The Seven Sorrows” (2007), continues the course of his predecessor superuspeshnogo, but where before yawning abyss of Eastern traditions and cults of the ancient Mediterranean, the music is deeply European in its basis, addressing the basics of esoteric Christianity. Being completely different in mood, but infinitely sad, and, in fact, no less tragic, this work is, perhaps, not so hopeless, but keep the faith and hope within. Perfection of form and beauty of the melody of the “Seven Sorrows” in no way inferior to the level of “That Which Is Tragic And Timeless”, and the voice samples of the metaphysical properties enhance the feeling of immersion in meditative contemplation deep grieving human soul.
Last album to date, “Years Lend a Golden Charm” - a retrospective of the very beginning of his career Johan Levin, including publication of the first 3-MC album “Consecrare”, “Via Peregrinus” and “Hortus Conclusus / Triptych”, recorded 1992-93 years. And not common at the time for various reasons. Today, after more than 15 years, the time of these recordings came, however, as he admits, Johan, their influence is felt throughout his career. Starting with “Songs Over Ruins” to the last masterpiece “Seven Sorrows”. Album was released in the format of a luxurious 6-panel digi-pack.
Apart Desiderii Marginis Johan is also involved in the team Galtagaldr, playing authentic medieval music, which plays on the Greek bouzouki guitar, dulcimer, flute, oboe and other instruments of the era. Among his other interests - history, medieval art and architecture, calligraphy, philosophy and archeology. Johan works in the archaeological department of the museum province of Östergötland.
