Album Description

The trick to a second record is to be working on it while you are still working on your first record, because once things start moving ,there is very little time to breathe, think or create.I of course did not do this and after a frantic 2008 spent touring all over the world and sleeping very little,it was time to get into writing mode.

Fortunately (or not) I was going through some turbulent stuff which fueled the first few tracks notably Spidersong and Little Black Box. In early 2009 I headed out to Los Angeles and moved into a "rock n roll" house in Venice Beach ,complete with a built in studio, a secret opium den behind a book case and a revolving cast of residents from Band of Skulls to Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays. Later that year with a few tunes under my belt I met with producer and uber drum maestro Joey Waronker (REM,Beck,Thom Yorke,Air) and we began work on AFEP all the while I was missioning back and forth to Europe for festivals and living with permanent jet lag.

We recorded most of the songs at Joey's home studio and a the rest were written and recorded in an extended month long jam session in London with Joey at Nigel Godrich's studio, the Hospital when we needed a change of scene. 68 Dream, my personal favourite from this record was the result of a dream and a studio jam the next day. It was this record that gave me the initial idea of living gypsy style with guitar and backpack and seeking grand moments and backdrops to fuel inspiration.

I hitched to the Burning Man festival in Nevada and spent time around the giant Sequoia trees writing these songs. I finished the record at years end with a version of an old song of mine We All Are Dancing, recorded back in Cape Town. Fittingly We All Are Dancing ended up going number one in South Africa and finally got my words and sounds recognized in the country where I grew up.
