Aaliyah es el tercero v de la cantante de R&B, bailarina, modelo y actriz Aaliyah.
“We Need A Resolution” fue el primer single de su tercer álbum, fue producido por Timbaland y el mismo participaba en él, fue lanzado el 24 de abril de 2001; desafortunadamente no significo un éxito como sus singles anteriores, a pesar de la excelente producción y un magnifico video. El disco fue lanzado tres meses más tarde, el 17 de julio de 2001 y aunque debutó en el #2 del 200 Hot Albums las ventas inicialmente fueron bajas, pero aumentaron de manera muy considerable después de la muerte de la cantante. “Aaliyah” fue recibido por la crítica y los medios con excelentes comentarios, ya que este álbum mostraba su lado más oscuro y una evidente evolución artística. Una semana después del accidente que acabó con la vida de Aaliyah el álbum subió al #1 de las listas de popularidad y fue certificado Platino por un millón de unidades vendidas.
La empresa discográfica no estaba de acuerdo en que canción del álbum debería ser el segundo single, así que finalmente lanzaron “More Than A Woman” pues Aaliyah ya había grabado el video con el director Dave Meyers y se había encargado de promocionar el tema. Se planeó grabar un Remix con la colaboración de Jay-Z, pero este hecho no se concretó. Y cuando estaba próximo el lanzamiento oficial del video de “More Than A Woman”, otra canción del álbum “Rock The Boat” comenzó a tener una gran demanda en la radio y una enorme audiencia, por lo que los ejecutivos de la discográfica enviaron a Aaliyah a filmar el video de este tema para lanzarlo oficialmente, aprovechando su gran popularidad radial. Así que “More Than A Woman” fue retirado de la promoción y “Rock The Boat” fue #2 en U.S. R&B y #14 en 100 Hot. A remarkable tribute to her ability.
Aaliyah is a fascinating work; it shows a 22-year-old artist truly finding her direction, delivering well-tailored material with élan. It rode the nu- and neo-soul wave perfectly and made her two previous, not unaccomplished albums (Age Ain't Nothing but a Number and One in a Million) look like exercises in juvenilia. She had waited nearly five years to release Aaliyah ”“ in the meantime she had been working in film and finishing school.
Produced and largely written by Timbaland, and mixed by veteran New York studio man Jimmy Douglass, the sound is still frighteningly contemporary, eschewing the obvious while not alienating the urban market. There are middle-eastern influences, hop-hop beats, RnB smoothness.
Opener We Need A Resolution ”“ a duet with Timabland ”“ demonstrates her strength. She was not a teenager anymore and the almost gothic setting over skeletal beats underlines this new maturity.
UK hit More Than A Woman is a standout. Over a grinding electronic backdrop, and a coda of dirty, squelchy synths, Aaliyah sings breathily and economically; I Care 4 U, a Missy Elliot co-write, would be a conventional ballad on a more obvious soul star's album. It's what Aaliyah doesn't do that make it still sound stunning ”“ it would have been so easy to over-ladle the emoting here.
Aayliah will forever be seen through a lens of what happened next. Within a month of release, she died in a plane crash in the Bahamas returning from filming the video for Rock the Boat. The album became an enormous international hit. Just how huge a star she would have become is obvious throughout. Aayliah stands as remarkable tribute to her ability.
