Mauro Ottolini (Bussolengo, 14 April 1972) is a trombonist, composer and conductor of Italian jazz music.
He is one of the most experimental Italian jazz musicians, working on conceptual and instrumental research. For years he has expressed his talent as a composer and as an arranger not only for his projects, but also for important jazz, rock, pop and avant-garde bands.
Biography:
He graduated in 1993 at the conservatory of Verona in trombone accompanied by pianist Renza Tavernini. Following the courses of improvement of Michel Becquet and in 1996 he began playing the trombone in the Arena of Verona where he will remain until 2008. In 2002 he graduated at the conservatory "Bonporti" of Trento in Jazz with Maestro Franco D'Andrea that chooses him for a long decades of collaboration for his formations. In Los Angeles he has the opportunity to study with the American trombonist Steve Turre, who starts him to study the sound of the shells.
Since 2002 he has collaborated and participated with various musical formations and Jazz musicians. Among the many Frank Lacy, Trilok Gurtu, Kenny Wheeler, Han Bennink, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Tony Scott, Maria Schneider and Gary Valente. He also collaborates with some big names in black music such as Grace Jones, Gino Vannelli, Emy Stewart, Joe Bowie.
His first recording project is in 1998, Otto Funk in which he plays with a rapper, and he transforms and evolves becoming his first jazz funk CD of 2005, where virtuosity and solos are a frame for funk and acid jazz. In Ecologic Island, however, he began to appreciate the skills of arranger and instrumental pole and In Slide Family of 2007 Ottolini is director of a training consisting of eleven trombones, two batteries and a deejay experience that leads him to form the roller coaster with which, between a CD and numerous concerts, pays homage to Italian music of the variety.
Sousaphonix:
In 2008 he founded the musical group Sousaphonix with which he began to study more deeply the polyphony or sousphonia and, above all, from an address to his path as arranger and director. The music of the Sousaphonix uses numerous unconventional musical instruments such as in the Chubanga music box with shells, bamboo saxophone, shinobue flute, the sound stones of Pinuccio Sciola and Sardinian craft instruments. With Sousaphonix he recorded Sousaphonix of 2009 an album between the blues, the reggae, the music of the Italian popular tradition, Duke Ellington and the sound experimentations. A year later comes The Sky Above Braddock based on a story by Mario Calabresi. This is the group's first concept album and the first soundtrack of a cartoon The Workman blues.
In 2015 Mauro Ottolini and the Sousaphonix record two concept albums and a documentary whose narrative theme is the aim of uniting all the music of the world. The starting point is a photograph of the Orchestra of the society without thoughts taken in Piazza Leone in Primolano on February 1921, and wondering about the cultural difference of the characters in the photo take the opportunity to deepen the musical knowledge looking for a new approach to improvisation . For the elaboration also in narrative terms the work is complex and leads to analysis of the improvisation in Arabic music to Russian melodic compositions and composing texts in Finnish and French and much space is reserved for popular music. All the music of the two albums use instruments non-conventional music such as the theremin, the six-string banjo, the podophone, toy instruments, the shells of the Antilles seas. A journey through the music of the world, from Haiti and from Latin America to Portugal by Amalia Rodriguez, Japan, the United States of Mahalia Jackson, Egypt and Lebanon.
