Jean Doyen, born in Paris on March 8, 1907 - died in Versailles on April 21, 1982 (aged 75), is a French pianist, teacher and composer.
Born Abel Jean Doyen, he graduated from the Paris Conservatoire as a pianist (1922). He began the instrument with Jeannine Barbulé (professor notably of Samson François and Yvonne Lefébure), then studied with Louis Diémer (1919) and finally with Marguerite Long. In 1924 he made his solo debut with the Orchester Colonne. He also participates in Jacques Ibert's ballet, Les Rencontres, at the Paris Opera.
In 1926 he worked at French Radio, but at the same time he returned to the Conservatory in the counterpoint class with Georges Caussade and in composition with Paul Vidal and Henri Büsser.
From 1941 to 1977, he held the post of professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire, succeeding Marguerite Long. His students include Idil Biret, Roger Boutry, Philippe Entremont, Marie Therese Fourneau, Claude Kahn, Andre Krust, Artur Moreira Lima, Bernard Job, Dominique Merlet and Chantal Riou.
Jean Doyen is best known for his interpretations of French music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly in the works of Gabriel Pierné, Reynaldo Hahn and Vincent d'Indy and considered as one of the great performers of this repertoire and above all , by Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré1. He also likes to play Fantasy on an old French round tune by Vincent d'Indy or the Three Danses de Samazeuilh. He has however recorded the waltzes of Frederic Chopin, and is the creator of the Variations on a Don Juan theme.
As a composer, he has published a Requiem, a piano concerto, a suite in si, Marine for string quartet and female vocal quartet1.
His daughter, Geneviève Doyen (1944-2004) was also a pianist. On the other hand, there is no relationship with Ginette Doyen (aka Geneviève Fournier, 1921-2002), a married and musical collaborator of the violinist Jean Fournier, himself a brother of Pierre Fournier (cellist).
