The Cologne Chamber Orchestra is the oldest chamber orchestra in Germany. In 1923, the idea of a work-oriented interpretation led to its founding. In 1963 Helmut Müller-Brühl took over the direction of the conductors of the first years - Hermann Abendroth and later Erich Kraack. A highly acclaimed tour of Switzerland with pianist Wilhelm Kempff in 1964 marked the beginning of his collaboration with numerous internationally renowned soloists. Since then, Müller-Brühl and the orchestra have enjoyed impressive successes in Europe, North and South America, Asia and at international festivals.
As part of the Brühler Schlosskonzerte, founded by Helmut Müller-Brühl and directed by him for more than three decades, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra regularly performed opera productions and concerts as a festival orchestra. Since 1988 it organizes the concert series "Das Meisterwerk" in the Kölner Philharmonie.
Traditionally, young soloists who were regarded as a newcomer or secret tip were invited by the Cologne Chamber Orchestra to the Kölner Philharmonie. As part of the concert series "The Masterpiece" Julia Fischer debuted as a 17-year-old; Names like Christoph Eschenbach, Christine Schäfer and Alban Gerhard are closely linked to the concert series.
Over 200 CD and record recordings, radio and television productions of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra document a repertoire of more than 500 masterpieces and unknown treasures. Since 1995, the orchestra has been linked to the globally present CD label Naxos by a constantly growing repertoire. In 2001, the recording of the three "Darmstadt Ouverturen" by Telemann was awarded the Cannes Classical Award.
Most recently, international guest performances have led the orchestra to several successful tours to South Korea and to Christoph Poppen's "Festival Internacional de Música do Marvão" in Portugal. In addition, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra has repeatedly performed at well-known festivals, such as the Festival in Heimbach, the Rheingau Music Festival and the Ruhr Piano Festival.
An extensive tour leads the orchestra this season with a half-staged opera by Haydn "Lo Speziale" under the direction of Jan Willem de Vriend in the Netherlands.
