Engegårdkvartetten saw the light under the spectacular Midnight Sun in Lofoten in 2006. Quickly, this chamber music ensemble one of the most sought after in Norway. The quartet is known for its many brave and fresh interpretations of the classical repertoire. At the same time the emphasis on highlighting its Scandinavian origins.
The quartet has gained international recognition, and they have helped to create good and close ties with several leading international athletes. The ambition is reflected in very diverse and rich concert programs.
Engegård quartet debut CD was released in 2008. The disc was hailed as Norway's best classical release in follow Kjell HILLVEG, one of the nation's most prominent music critics. For this disc got Engegårdkvartetten also brilliant international reviews, including "The playing is breathtaking" in "The Strad" and "First rate quartet playing" in "International Record Review." Their second release was awarded the highly coveted "Supersonic Award" by music magazine "Pizzicato".
In January 2016, their latest CD released with success. This disc includes works by Nordic masters like Grieg, Sibelius and Olav Anton Thommessen. Engegårdkvartetten is active with its concerts in Scandinavia and abroad. Europe's finest concert halls are a guest, which the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and Rudolfinium in Prague. Important festivals have also gained experience their enthusiasm as the Sonoro Festival in Bucharest, St. Magnus International Festival in Orkney, as well as in the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany. In 2015 they played to an enthusiastic audience in Bogota, and Sao Paolo in South America.
Members of Engegårdkvartetten are all basic keen to promote chamber music at home in Norway. Arvid Engegård is both founder and artistic director of Lofoten International Chamber Music Festival, and Juliet Jopling is heavily involved in Oslo Quartet Series as founder and artistic advisor.
Among other things Engegårdkvartetten been lucky enough to play with Leif Ove Andsnes, Christian Ihle Hadland, Emma Johnson, and András Schiff. The quartet also thrives in the company with the established folk musician Nils Økland and actor Bjørn Sundquist.
The quartet has many exciting projects ahead of it, including the fall 2016 an innovative concert series 'Schumann on 1-2-3' in Oslo with pianists Havard Gimse, Nils Anders Mortensen and soprano Isa Katharina Gericke, as well as a colorful collaboration with jazz violinist Ola Kvernberg in 2017.
