Artist Biography
Café Zimmermann is the name of Gottfried Zimmermann's establishment located in Leipzig, St. Catherine Street. In the eighteenth century, each week, the Collegium Musicum, founded by Georg Philipp Telemann, and conducted by Johann Sebastian Bach between 1729 and 1739, gave a concert composed of secular cantatas or instrumental music.
At the time, Leipzig attracted many musicians to see the Cantor or simply to participate in the musical life of the city. No program of the coffee repertoire has reached us, but newspaper articles announce the varied and numerous concerts, it is supposed that one gave pieces composed by Bach, his sons, Telemann, but also those of the greatest European composers whose music circulated in scores or in the heads of musicians, passing through Leipzig. The building was destroyed by the bombing of Leipzig in December 1943. The site remained uncultivated for more than 60 years.
The name of this establishment was totally forgotten until a French Baroque orchestra decided to call itself that. This is the ensemble "Café Zimmermann (ensemble)" "Café Zimmermann" which was founded in 1998 by Pablo Valetti and Céline Frisch.
