Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Miles Dewey Davis III was born May 26, 1926, Alton, IL, and grew up in East St. Louis, IL, the son of a successful dental surgeon. Davis took up studying trumpet in his early teens, playing with local bands until he moved to New York City in 1944 to study at the Juilliard School. But his ultimate training during this time was as a side man to Charlie Parker. "The Miles Davis All Stars - Broadcast Sessions" are live performances at venues in and around New York recorded between May 1958 and January 1959, the period between "Milestones" (Columbia, 1958) and "Kind of Blue" (Columbia, 1959). The various quintets and sextets are ably staffed by Miles Davis, trumpet; John Coltrane, tenor sax; Cannonball Adderley, alto sax; Red Garland, piano; Bill Evans, piano; Wynton Kelly, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; Philly Joe Jones, drums; Jimmy Cobb, drums; Gerry Mulligan, baritone sax; and Candido, percussion. Perhaps no musician has had as much influence on the course of jazz history in the second half of the 20th Century as Miles Davis. From the time of this recording until his death from a stroke at 65 in 1991, Davis redefined himself and successively redefined jazz. And no jazz musician epitimized "cool" as did Davis in the popular culture.
