Wanting to expand his horizons, Earl Scruggs split with long - term (from 1948) partner Lester Flatt in 1969 to form a band with his sons, Randy (electric & acoustic guitars), Gary (vocals, bass & harmonica, along with Bob Wilson on piano and Jody Maphis on drums. Vassar Clements (fiddle), Josh Graves (dobro, vocals)and eventually youngest son Steve were also members at various times. The band are credited with being amongst the pioneers of country rock.
