Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon
Blake Lewis consistently moves towards the future. The singer, songwriter, and producer is about to kickstart another phase for pop music with his first single for Republic Records, "Your Touch." A sexy hybrid of massive melodies and electronic dance music energy, it's an infectious introduction to his forthcoming third full-length album, Portrait of a Chameleon, and the next chapter of his illustrious career. When he began writing in 2012, Lewis wanted to draw upon one of his first and deepest passions--electronic music. A devout fan of dance since the early '90s, he aimed to incorporate elements of the genre into his sound. He doesn't merely assimilate to that electronic dance feel though; he draws it into his world. "I'd call it future pop," he affirms. "Across the album, we juxtapose so many different kinds of music. It's very anthemic, and there's an epic feel." "Your Touch" provides the perfect starting point. Boasting an unforgettable hook and "Decepticon bass," as Lewis likes to call it, the single stands out as a fresh, fun, and fiery story about pursuing the girl or guy of your dreams. "For as long as I can remember, I've always been the coward who's afraid to ask the girl out," he admits with a laugh. "I never had the guts. This is a fantasy record. I picture a guy daydreaming about getting his dream girl. It's dedicated to any young dude out there trying to get the girl." The track debuts in a very big way as the soundtrack to Microsoft's 2013 Internet Explorer ad campaign. Last year, Lewis actually suggested Alex Clare's "Too Close" to director Keith Rivers for the company's "A More Beautiful Web" campaign, and now his own single is fueling its successor. With its hyper kinetic beat, it's an apropos companion to the entrancing visuals. Upon its release, Portrait of a Chameleon will signify something of a new beginning for Lewis who first rose to prominence on the sixth season of American Idol with his impressive vocal abilities and the distinction of being the show's first-ever contestant to arrange his own performances. Like his beginning, the Microsoft campaign launch and the forthcoming album will demonstrate the breadth of Lewis' seemingly limitless skills as not only a talented and creative vocalist but also a gifted songwriter, producer and composer. "It's completely different from my first two albums because I'm producing it," he goes on. "I love those past records, but there were too many cooks in the kitchen. I feel like this is really me on tape. It's pretty magical." This new single and album are poised to elevate him above and beyond what fans know of him from his 2007 debut, Audio Day Dream, which moved over 350,000 copies and his follow up, Heartbreak on Vinyl from 2009. While the success of these two albums lead him to tour and perform alongside everyone from pop powerhouses Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Wyclef Jean to electronic luminaries BT and The Crystal Method; gained him recognition as the first former American Idol to reach #1 on both Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay Chart and Dance/Club play chart; and the opportunity to teach First Lady Michelle Obama how to beatbox at a luncheon in her honor, Portrait of a Chameleon will show Lewis' truest colors and open new doors for him. The magic he so speaks of, beaming with pride, is also going to keep listeners engaged for a long time to come. "I want people to listen to it over and over again," he concludes. "I think they'll find something different each time they hear it. I never wanted to stick to one style or stay in one place. I haven't been more proud of anything in my life."
