Richard Wright or Rick Wright is a British musician and singer-songwriter born July 28, 1943 in London and died September 15, 2008 in London. A keyboardist, he is one of the founding members of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd, playing a discreet but indispensable role in the development of the band's particular sound, often singing in harmony with David Gilmour. He participated in the recording of all Pink Floyd albums except The Final Cut, as well as all his tours. He has also released three solo albums, two under his own name and one with Dave Harris under the band name Zee and titled Identity.
Biography :
Richard William Wright was born on July 28, 1943 in Hatch End, a suburb of northwestern London then in Middlesex County. He is the son of Robert Charles Wright, who works as a biochemist for Unigate Dairies, and his wife Daisy Hughes. He grew up with his two sisters in Pinner, also in northwestern London, and began his schooling at Haberdashers' Aske's School in Cricklewood1,2.
Wright started playing music at the age of 12. He began playing guitar, trumpet and piano during his convalescence after breaking his leg, and his mother helped him learn the piano. He studied music theory and composition with Eric Gilder3 and began playing trombone and saxophone under the influence of Britain's jazz revival in the 1950s.
In 1962 Wright joined Regent Street Polytechnic to study architecture. There he meets other students passionate about music: Roger Waters and Nick Mason. With a classmate, Clive Metcalf, they form a band called Sigma 64. He does not have a dedicated instrument: he plays the piano when the bars where they occur have one and fall back on the trombone or the guitar rhythmic in the opposite case5,6. At the end of a year, he dropped out of architecture studies, a topic he did not really like, unlike Waters and Mason, and enrolled at the London College of Music4. The group knows many changes of names before adopting for good that of Pink Floyd, on an idea of the guitarist Syd Barrett.
