Esben and the Witch are a three piece gothic rock band from Brighton, England. After a self-released EP 33 in 2009 and a limited 7-inch single "Lucia, at the Precipice" in February 2010, the band signed with Matador Records. The band's debut single for the label, "Marching Song", was released on 11 October 2010 and their debut album Violet Cries was released on January 31, 2011,whilst the band's second album, Wash the Sins Not Only the Face, was announced on October 29, 2012, with a release date set for January 21, 2013. Esben and the Witch formed in Brighton in 2008. Their name come from the Danish fairytale Esben and the Witch. The band said about the name “It is something we stumbled upon, we liked the story and the imagery involved and the subtle malevolence and the odd messages intrinsically involved in all fairytales". “I think a lot of people think though that we are better educated about fairytales and more enamoured than we actually are, but we don’t know more than anyone else really.” In 2009 they self-released their debut release the 33 EP which received generally positive reviews. Also that year they were featured on volume 3 of the Dance to the radio 4x12" with their song Skeleton Swoon. In 2010 They released their first official single Lucia, at the Precipice on 7" vinyl limited to 500 copies. The single received good reviews and a video was made and directed by Lydia C-S. Later in 2010 they signed witch matador records and released their second single Marching Song which was very well received and is well associated with the band. In 2011 they had been shortlisted for Q magazine next big thing, Daniel Copeman said “It’s flattering to be mentioned in that sort of way, but it puts a weight of expectation onto people as to how we may sound and we’re not comfortable with that really. They were also in the shortlist for BBC sound of 2011. Eventually in January the band released their debut full length LP Violet Cries on matador and had two singles from the album, Marching Song and Chorea. The album was received very positive reviews, NME said it was gothic but not goth giving it 8/10 and the album reached number 13 in the uk indie charts. In 2012 they revealed the new song Deathwaltz for their second album Wash The Sins Not Only The Face which will be released on 21st January 2013.

Esben and the Witch said they have been influenced by the geography and poetry, Thomas Fisher said "I think the reason we cite things like that as our influences is because its harder to pin down your musical influences to a couple of artists who you like. I think it’s more complex than that because you’re shaped by all kinds of things that you listen to. Sometimes you might not necessarily like the entire thing but there’s parts that you find inspiring within it. Whereas, the things we find in like literature and art just seem sort of interesting". Esben and the Witch are usually associated with the gothic rock scene. Rachel said about this "I think um, yeah it’s funny it has been mentioned a lot. But I think the key to it is the difference between ‘Goth’ and ‘Gothic’ and um, being affiliated with the Gothic side of things is, you know, something we are quite happy to be involved with. Not that we would put ourselves into that category, but there’s definitely a link between our music and that architecture and literature"
