User Album Review
Subtlety is the last thing we expect from Once Human, and in that respect the Los Angeles-based outfit offers no surprises on its sophomore album. Now a sextet with a pulverizing three-guitar attack, the group formed by Soulfly and Machine Head veteran Logan Mader is as brutally fierce on 'Evolution' as it was on 2015’s 'The Life I Remember,' but with a more advanced dynamic intensity. Arrangements shift and swirl from doomy stomps to taut grooves under Lauren Hart’s demonic growls, turning tracks such as “Eye of Chaos,” “Paragon” and especially the album-closing “Passenger” into suite-like mini-epics that may be dizzying for the unprepared. The sheer wall of sound can feel at times impenetrable, but Mader and his six-string cohorts do step out occasionally (most notably on “Gravity”) for Hart to toss in just enough clean vocals to provide some necessary sonic relief. GARY GRAFF
